Magdalena Cichocka

“The notions of recycling and upcycling serve the artist as a kind of master key to question the idea of evaluating art according to its ecological potential. Within this practice, the conditions of cultural and artistic production—unable to exist without a material component—are subjected to revision.
Mateusz Pęk uses materials that evoke ambiguous emotions: worn-out furniture, remnants of car parts, or household appliances. These are materials that are unsettling due to their constantly increasing global presence, yet intriguing because of the heroic attempts to process them again. From them, the artist creates seemingly attractive forms with an enigmatic function which, thanks to their segmented construction, give the impression of slowly expanding. This ‘secret life’ develops under the cover of aestheticization; however, it does not seem to manifest a return to purity and beauty.”
