FNAF 8: Nudity as a political gesture

Introduction

The eighth year of the Festival of Naked Forms takes place in the situation of the attack on the independent state of Ukraine by Russian troops. In the light of this conflict threatening the stability of the whole world, we want to highlight the arsenal that nudity hides in itself

Numerous evidences from folkloric tradition, especially in Slavic areas, but historically dating back to antiquity to Pliny the Elder, attest to the belief that a strong apotropaic power emanates from the naked body. An exposed bare ass or natural can ward off a natural disaster or bad weather, and like Medusa's head can petrify an enemy with its apparition. The fluid group Femen, which was founded in Ukraine and which enriched the Czech public space in a unique way when it surprised President Zeman during the 2018 elections, expresses this with the slogan: hot breasts, cool heads and clean hands (see, https://femen.org/about-us/).

Our performances certainly do not replace the weapons that would help with the defense of the attacked country, but they can clearly be a means. They can be a means of expressing our utter nakedness in the face of incomprehensible injustice, or a means of calling ancient magical means to action. "The body seems to be simultaneously anchored in the divine and natural order of things. This religiosity inherently includes significant expressions of physicality, in which we can observe that the intensity of physical exhibition corresponds to the importance and value of the goal to be achieved.” (Alexandra Navrátilová, „Nahota v obřadní tradici české kultury,“ in: Iva Doležalová, Eleónora Hamar, Luboš Bělka eds., Náboženství a tělo, Brno – Praha 2006, p. 60). The value of the goal in this case is very high, the intensity and quality of the performances of the 8th year of FNAF will certainly correspond to this.

FNAF 8: Nagość jako gest polityczny

Wprowadzenie

Ósmy rok Festiwalu Nagich Form ma miejsce w sytuacji ataku wojsk rosyjskich na niepodległe państwo ukraińskie. W świetle tego konfliktu zagrażającego stabilności całego świata chcemy wskazać na arsenał, jaki kryje w sobie nagość.

Liczne dowody z tradycji folklorystycznej, zwłaszcza na terenach słowiańskich, ale datowane historycznie od starożytności i Pliniusza Starszego, świadczą o przekonaniu, że nagie ciało emanuje silną mocą apotropeiczną. Pokazanie gołego tyłka czy nagość mogą odeprzeć klęskę żywiołową, złą pogodę i podobnie jak głowa Meduzy może zmienić wroga w kamień. Nieformalna grupa Femen, która powstała na Ukrainie i która w wyjątkowy sposób wzbogaciła czeską przestrzeń publiczną, zaskoczyła prezydenta Zemana podczas wyborów w 2018 roku hasłem: gorące piersi, chłodne głowy i czyste ręce (zob., https://femen.org/about-us/).

Nasze performance z pewnością nie zastępują broni, która pomogłaby w obronie zaatakowanego kraju, ale z mogą mieć znaczenie. Mogą być środkiem wyrażającym naszą całkowitą nagość w obliczu niezrozumiałej niesprawiedliwości lub sposobem na wezwanie do działania starożytnych sił magicznych. „Ciało wydaje się być jednocześnie zakotwiczone w boskim i naturalnym porządku rzeczy. Ta religijność z natury zawiera znaczące przejawy fizyczności, w których możemy zaobserwować, że intensywność fizycznej ekspozycji odpowiada wadze i wartości celu, który ma zostać osiągnięty.” (Alexandra Navrátilová, „Nahota v obřadní tradici české kultury,“ w: Iva Doležalová, Eleónora Hamar, Luboš Bělka red., Náboženství a tělo, Brno – Praha 2006, s. 60.). Cel w tym przypadku ma wielkie znaczenie, intensywność i jakość występów w ósmym roku FNAF z pewnością będzie temu odpowiadać.

FNAF 8: Workshop

The workshops are organized for students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. However, it is open to anyone interested from outside the ASP. Workshop conducted by prof. Lenka Klodová, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Body Design Studio.The results of the workshops, and the performance works created during the workshops, will be presented to the public on October 6, 2022, at the Patio Gallery at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk as part of the FNAF 8 festival.

Workshop’s assumptions

FNAF in Gdansk organizes an intensive workshop on Nudity as a Political Gesture. The workshop will consist of 5-6 events led by Czech artists, participants of the performance festival.

The lecturers, together with the participants, will explore the possibilities of whether it is possible to be politically active as a body or, on the contrary, if it is possible to solve political issues and leave the body out of it. They will investigate whether the potential of nudity is now completely destroyed as it has been absorbed by the porn industry or whether it is still possible to see some diversionary or even magical power in it.

Warsztaty są organizowane dla studentów ASP w Gdańsku. Jednak ich charakter jest otwarty dla zainteresowanych spoza ASP.

Warsztaty prowadzi prof. Lenka Klodová, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Body Design Studio.

Efekty warsztatów oraz zrealizowane podczas warsztatów performance zostaną zaprezentowane publicznie 6 października 2022 roku w Galerii Patio Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku w ramach festiwalu FNAF 8.

Założenia programowe warsztatów

FNAF w Gdańsku organizuje intensywne warsztaty na temat nagości jako gestu politycznego. Warsztaty będą się składać z 5-6 wydarzeń prowadzonych przez czeskich artystów, uczestników festiwalu performance.

Wykładowcy wspólnie z uczestnikami będą badać, czy możliwe jest bycie aktywnym politycznie jako ciało, lub też przeciwnie, czy możliwe jest rozwiązywanie kwestii politycznych z pominięciem ciała, poza nim. Zbadamy, czy potencjał nagości został całkowicie zniszczony, ponieważ został wchłonięty przez przemysł pornograficzny, czy nadal można dostrzec w nim pewną dywersyjną, a nawet magiczną moc.
